Nursing Students Serve on the Frontlines at Vaccination Clinics

Butte College nursing students are receiving hands-on training while serving a vital role in their communities by working at COVID-19 vaccination clinics.

Nursing students began by staffing the essential worker clinic at Enloe Hospital when the vaccine became available in December 2020.  The Enloe site staffed with an instructor and four students four days a week. Butte College currently has two students at this site, 2 days a week.

On February 3, Butte College nursing students started assisting at the community vaccine clinic located at Meriam Park in Chico.  A total of six students work there, Monday through Thursday along with an instructor.

The hours that students spend at the COVID-19 vaccine clinic are counted toward community clinical and medical/surgical clinical hours and provides valuable, hands-on experience.

"Participating in the COVID-19 vaccine clinic creates an authentic, real-world and rare experience for our students. They are engaged in an extraordinary and historic health crisis. They witness and participate in organizing a vaccine clinic that allows more than 1,200 patients per day to receive a vaccine,” said Laurie Meyer, Butte College nursing department chair.

“They will see nursing up close and personal, from a viewpoint that few previous nursing students have experienced."
